Azienda Giacomo Brezza Barolo Sarmassa 2016
A top Cru Barolo from a n excellent producer
The Brezza Family has farmed near the village of Barolo since 1885 and the Estate takes its name from Giacomo Brezza who first started estate bottling in 1910. The family farms organically using green fertilizers from grasses and bean planted between the vines and careful pruning of their old vines here some over 80 years of age. Their Sarmassa vineyard is planted on silt, white clay and sand the clay and silt adds weight and helps retain moisture in hot years.
The grapes are hand picked destemmed and crushed and fermented in stainless steel for 7-8 days and a further maceration on the skins for 10 days with pumping over for colour extraction. The wine then passes to concrete tanks for its Malolactic fermentation and then to large old Slovenian oak barrels where it rests for another two years before bottling without filtration.
This has a roundness and ripeness and subtle tannins that make it very attractive and drinkable but this has the capacity for serous aging if required
