Domaine Bertrand-Bergé Fitou Les Mégalithes 2017 Fitou AOC
The powerful mineral wrapped Les Mégalithes is made up of 95% Carignan from the oldest vines on the estate up to 90 years of age and some Grenache for balance.
Fitou was the first appellation granted in the Languedoc back in 1948 and interestingly it is split into two different areas separated by a chunk of Corbière AOC, the low lying Fitou Maritime is on the coast and about 15 miles north is the high lying Fitou Haut. Here the soils are made up of schist which gives minerality and power to the wines and the altitude restrains the alcohol. One of the best estates there is Domaine Bertrand-Bergé, which has been run by husband and wife Jérome and Sabine Bertrand since 1993. They farm their 33 hectares of parcellated vines organically and the wines sees no oak due to the high mineral content from the shist soils. The Les Mégalithes is made up of 95% Carignan from the oldest vines on the estate up to 90 years of age and some Grenache for balance. This is powerful with deep colour and a nose of dark fruits, dark chocolate and wild herbs. The powerful palate of mineral wrapped berries, Gauloises tobacco and tapenade begs for a big meal to wrestle with.
