Domaine Hurst Hono 2018 Vin De France
A really interesting skin contact Pinot Gris from a Grand Cru site and a top Alsace Producer
Domaine Hurst dates from 1926 but the family’s vinous roots go back to the 17th century, now run by thirteenth generation Armand Hurst and his wife Nicole. With a financial investment in 2016 from Marc Rinaldi, Colmar industrialist, serial entrepreneur and long-time benefactor of the Alsace vignoble, the estate has been transformed. Marc brought in a new team led by Samuel Tottoli, a sommelier turned winemaker who had previously spent more than a dozen years reinvigorating the famous Alsace house of Kuentz-Bas. The transformation here has been swift and dramatic with notable gains in concentration, texture and vitality, all of them shaped by the peculiar geology of their large holding in the Grand Cru of Brand’s granitic soils. A new biodynamic regime saw the entirety of the domaine certified by Demeter in 2019
The Hono is an exciting departure from the norm for Alsace, a skin contact Pinot Gris from vines in the Grand Cru of Brand. Because its method of productions it fails all the laws of the Alsace AOC and is thus a Vin de France.
From old low yielding Pinot Gris vines from the Grand Cru of Brand, 50% whole bunch 50% destemmed is given a light pressing then a 20 days skin maceration, natural vinification without adding yeasts, fermentation in old oak casks with aging on fine lees. Bottled unfiltered it has a light deposit and a deep more Rosé than red colour. Its sweet-and-sour attack, intensely dry saline prolongation on the palate and twist of tannin on the finish make for a wine of great gastronomic potential. It shares a flavour spectrum to a fine Japanese sake to which it is a homage.
The label is the work of, master Japanese calligrapher Keishu Kawai, HONO expresses fire in Japanese and reflects the solar and luminous terroir of the Brand Grand Cru from whence this comes.
