Nerkihue Quiebre Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 Valle de Lolol
This delicious Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the cool Valle De Lolol in Colghagua
Nerkihue Vineyards (pronounced ne-reh-key-way) is located in Lolol, in Chile’s Colchagua Valley. Their vineyards grow on steep slopes that, together with the marine influence and shallow soils, give rise to aromatic, fresh, and elegant wines. Here the Arteaga family has been farming grapes since the 1930s but largely focused their energies on selling the fruit to bulk wine producers until the early 2000’s. Loreta ‘Loly’ Arteaga works alongside her father Domingo on the overall running of the winery but Loly devotes her energies to her Quiebre range.
The Quibre Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 92% Cabernet Sauvignon 8% Petit Verdot. With good deep colour in the glass and restrained dark fruits and herbs on the nose the palate opens up with blackcurrants and plums with hint of chocolate and a mineral soft tannined finish. Very attractive and drinkable.
The vines are grown on a combination of granite and clay-loam soil slopes and typically yield just 4 tonnes per hectare. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by 14 months in neutral barrels (fourth or fifth use). The wine is bottled unfiltered, just 2,800 bottles produced.
The Valle de Lolol in south west of the Colchagua Valley, centred on the small town of Lolol, located in a valley within the coastal ranges on the west coast of Chile. Lolol is only 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the Pacific Ocean with its cool Humboldt Current, and as such is significantly cooler than other parts of the Colchagua Valley. Cool, misty mornings are followed by warm days, and then south-westerly breezes in the evening bring the temperature down overnight. This diurnal temperature variation in vineyards allows the grapes time off overnight from ripening, extending the growing season and contributing to a balance of sugar and acidity in the ripe fruit.
