Rascallion Wines Pandiculation Red 2020 Stellenbosch
The Rascallion Pandiculation is a blend of 85% Shiraz and 15% Grenache sourced from two north and northwest facing vineyards in Stellenbosch
We are excited to take on these excellent wines from Rascallion, quirky, interesting blends ideal for dinking now and well priced too.
Rascallion Wines was set up as a negociant in 2017 by Ross Sleet after time spent in the UK and South African wine trade with the idea to make attractive easy drinking blended wines from classic grapes sourced in the Western Cape aided by winemaker Riane Strydom.
The Rascallion Pandiculation is a blend of 85% Shiraz and 15% Grenache sourced from two north and northwest facing vineyards in Stellenbosch. The grapes were handpicked in late February, very early in the morning, which allowed for the grapes to be delivered cold to the cellar where they
were hand sorted, some de-stemmed and lightly crushed and others whole bunch fermented. The two cultivars were vinified separately. Fermentation took place in open fermenters for the Shiraz and a closed fermenter for the Grenache. After a short maceration period of 7 days after primary fermentation for the Shiraz, and 3 days for the Grenache, both wines were matured for 18 months in old 300L French oak barrels. The wines were blended prior to bottling.
The Shiraz not surprisingly dominates the nose and palate with, Grenache, dark cherry notes as a counterpoint to the spicy peppery plum fruit. Good weight and ripe tannins and really good length.
