Tasting Notes
Florentino Arzuaga's huge estate, planted in the poor sandy soil at an altitude of over 900 m, is in the best area of Ribera, neighboring Vega Sicilia and Pingus. The vineyards almost seem to take second place to the game reserve surrounding them, stuffed with wild boar and deer which he loves to hunt. But with young winemaker Adolfo Gonzalez at the helm, who has worked at Vega Sicilia and Domaine de la Romanée Conti amongst others, these wines are top quality. The 2013 is a triumph in a difficult cool and wet year, 100% Tempranillo having made a vigorous grape selection rejecting the normal slug of Cabernet Sauvignon. Dense and dark fruited with a silky, meaty and very tasty mid palate. Well balanced with a perky but pleasant acidity. Polished and well integrated tannins and a long and persistent finish.
