Tasting Notes
The quite substantial Sanhe Winery is situated in the Changbai Mountains in Liaoning Province of north eastern China, close to the border with North Korea. The vineyards are planted on a gentle south facing gentle slope at a altitude of 380 Metres, here long sunshine hours and cool evenings are ideal for ripening and in winter the temperature regularly falls to -8° C for up to 24 hours so it is not surprising that this region is the foremost ice wine production area in China and probably the largest in the world. The Vidal Grapes are hand picked at -8°C and taken to the state of the art winery when still frozen and pressed immediately, the intently sweet must ferments very slowly in stainless steel tanks and further aging for over 3 years before bottling. A deep golden colour in the glass with a stunning nose of flowers sweet melon and dessert grapes and very intense palate of sweet yellow plum, honey and orange flower syrup the lemony acidity gives balance and freshness to the very long palate. Very impressive.
