Tasting Notes
You will not find any other French wine from 1968 with a score of 95 points from the Wine Advocate. These wines are bullet proof and will age well or drink beautifully, once opened they will hold really well too, so you don't have to drink all at once. Riveyrac is a Cave Co-op which still has a few old barrels of these unique wine left. Made from Grenache Rouge, Gris and Blanc, fermented to only 6% alcohol, still sweet, then the fermentation is stopped by the addition of 96 % proof alcohol (a process known as Mutage). The resulting wines are left in large glass Demi-Johns to oxidize in the open air before long aging in large oak barrels. This process is no longer used today so these wines are a decreasing rarity. Philippe Gayral has been buying casks over the last few years and bottling these treasures before they are lost. “The 1968 Rivesaltes is a blend of Grenache Gris and Grenache Blanc that lends this a rancio style. I love the nose with stewed figs, Medjool dates, a touch of toffee and smoke. The palate is sharp and penetrating on the entry with a superb bead of acidity that is beautifully balanced with hints of dark chocolate, fresh ginger, cumin and lemon thyme toward the dry, brilliantly focused finish. This is an outstanding Rivesaltes from Philippe Gayral. Drink 2017-2035." 95 points, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate
