Description
Back in 2003 Domingos Alves de Sousa and his son Tiago, now head winemaker, began a project to demarcate the various parcels of their old vineyards. The Lordela vineyard which holds some of their oldest vines was an obvious area to vinify separately. Planted with over 30 differing varietals almost all over 100 years of age including classic Touriga Nacional, Tinto Amerela and the rare Malvasia Preta, producing about one small bunch per vine.
The grapes are hand picked, destemmed and fermented for 7 days at 20-25° with futher maceration for another 10 days before pressing. The wine is run into French oak barrels, 50% new, for aging. The wine is dark and spicy with powerful dark fruits but still suprisingly balanced/poised for such a full bodied wine.
