Description
Pietradolce was founded by brothers Michele and Mario Faro drawing on knowledge from their Etna farmer grandfather and using all their skills as vineyard brokers and nursery men to beat the rush to snap up some of the best sites high up on the northern and eastern slopes of Mount Etna. The patchwork of single vineyards, with old un-grafted vines growing at high altitude, on sandy volcanic soils make for fascinating complex wines. Factor in top winemaker Carlo Ferrini at the helm and these pure expressive tiny production wines are much in demand. The old bush vine Caricante used here are between 100 and 120 years old and are planted 850 metres up on the eastern slope of Mount Etna, yielding only 1 kilo of grapes per vine. The complex yeasty, mineral wrapped nose with ripe apples and pears draws you in and a powerful palate of lemon rind again pears and melon with minerals and hints of salt, really long and very interesting. No oak here.
