£99.99

A stunning Douro red sourced from two small plots of vines over 100 years old grown close to the Douro river.

Description

Quinta Nova’s Referencia P28/P21 comes from two parcels of ancient vines. Parcela 28 is planted on a steep (25%) slope between 205 and 210 m up with  75% Tinto Roriz and and assortment of other varietals all in excess of 100 years old. Parcela 21 is lower lying and closer to the river between 120-150m up. Enclosed in a 2.5 metre high wall this is planted with about 8o varietals all in excess of 100 years of age, 8%  is made up of the increadibly rare Donzelinho Tinto  and 3% are white grapes. The wines are blended and aged for 12 months in new French oak.

Quinta Nova sits on the north side of the Douro in the Cima Corgo the best area of the Douro. Owned by the Amorim family since 1999, their 85 hectares of vines fan out up the steep slope above the pretty 19th century manor house and waterfront chapel where travelers would stop and pray before ascending the terrifying rapids further up the Douro towards Pinhão, before the river was dammed in the 1960’s.

The estate is now mainly used for their exciting range of table wines benefitting from the schist soils and 41 differing plots.
