Alves de Sousa Caldas Douro Tinto 2022
A delicious un-oaked Douro Red from top site from a top grower
This attractive Douro red comes from the largest of the six vineyards, Quintas, owned by the Alves de Sousa family. The 33 hectare Quinta do Caldas is a beautiful setting overlooking the Douro, this ancient vineyard once belonged to the famous Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, Port’s equivalent to Madame Ponsardin better known as Veuve Clicquot. Her story is well worth a Goggle in a bored moment. The vineyard is in transition at present being replanted with the very latest innovative techniques while maintaining its historic roots.
The wines are made by Tiago Alves de Sousa, recognised as one of Portugal’s most exciting winemakers, an unoaked blend of classic Douro varietals Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. Very fragrant, with blackberries flavours, violets, dark chocolate and a peppery hint. Smooth, with plenty of fruit, and length.
