Description
The Monte Bernardi estate is situated in Panzano, one of the best sites in the Chianti Classico region. Owned since 2003 by Michael Schmelzer who has invested heavily in its vineyards and cellar, the results are impressive. The estate extends to 45 hectares but only 15 are under vine, mostly farmed organically and biodynamically. Their exciting, complex MB 1933 is a field blend from a small high lying vineyard, 470-500m, planted in 1933, one of the oldest in the Chianti Classico DOCG. Mostly Sangiovese 93% with ten other varietals including some white varietals. Fermented in cement and oak using natural yeasts then a long maceration before pressing and running off into 900l tonneaux and larger oak cuves for 16 months aging.
