Domaine Madeloc Collioure Rouge Serral 2020
This delicious juicy red from Collioure is made Grenache, Mouvedre and Syrah
Pierre Gaillard has a background steeped in viticulture and wine making, growing up amongst vines, he was caught aged 12, ploughing a nearby vineyard with a horse. He then went on to study viticulture in Beaune and winemaking in Montpellier before becoming viticultural manager for the famous Rhône house of Guigal. He bought his own vines in St Joseph, Cote Rotie and Condrieu in 1981 before adding Domaine Maledoc near Banyuls-sur-Mer in 2002, he manages a total of 77 hectare of vines today.
His Collioure Rouge, Serral, comes from high density vines planted at altitude on schist soils, the closeness of the vines forces them to put down deep roots to find the limited water. The Serral is made from 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and 5% Syrah given a cold maceration before a warm fermentation in tank to extract colour fruit and softer tannins. The Grenache is mostly aged in tank and the Mouvedre and Syrah in barrel.
With a nose of dark fruits herbs and liquorice and an attractive full palate of dark cherries and smoky notes, drinking perfectly.
